Calumet College of St. Joseph (CCSJ) and Bank On Northwest Indiana members have partnered through financial literacy, and are offering a workshop that is free and open to the public.
“Calumet College of St. Joseph is pleased to continue its’ tradition of bringing important topics to the attention of the community. Thanks to our partners in Bank On Northwest Indiana, we are excited to offer insights into credit cards, identity theft, budgeting and banking relationships. This forum will allow participants to listen to, and learn from, local financial institutional leaders first hand. We believe that sharing this knowledge is a great first step in helping people understand how these topics affect their lives. We look forward to seeing our neighbors on Tuesday, September 27th at 8:30 a.m. and helping them gain the confidence to make educated financial decisions.” stated Terry Ferrari, Business Management/Economics faculty member at the College.
Registration will take place from 8:30 – 9:00 am; an overview from 9:00 – 9:15 am; Session I from 9:30 – 10:20 am and Session II from 10:30 – 11:20 am. Light refreshments will be served. To register for the event, please call Calumet College of St. Joseph’s Development Office at 219-463-4318 or email Melissa at mgenoval@ccsj.edu.
The effort is supported by the FDIC, Indiana State Treasurer’s Office, Centier Bank, Citizens Financial Bank, First Midwest Bank, Peoples Bank, Northwest Indiana Community Action, Lake Area United Way, The Holok Group, Greater Hammond Community Services and United Neighborhood Organizations, Inc. The financial institutions will be making the presentations as part of their commitment to have at least one public financial literacy event per quarter.
This effort is geared to help individuals increase their income and decrease their expenses in a variety of ways. It is also worth noting that people who don’t use mainstream financial institutions spend an estimated $1,148 a year on check-cashing services, which charge a percentage of the value of the check, according to a study by the Pew Charitable Trust. “I applaud the efforts of Bank on Northwest Indiana in helping to decrease the number of unbanked consumers in their local communities,” said State Treasurer Richard Mourdock. “In the long run, individuals who have a relationship with their local financial institutions will reduce monthly expenses, save for their future, and establish a good credit history.”
Bank on NWI is an activity of the Financial Stability Alliance. The group meets every month at Lake Area United Way’s office in Griffith and is seeking more banks, credit unions and community organizations to join the effort.
